Boris, the leader who stood for his people when they most needed him

The novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 has wreaked havoc across the global community, causing significant harm to international economies, social safety nets, standards of living as well as leading to massive job losses in markets that were once viewed as “concrete strong”

The fight to stymie the spread of COVID-19 within populations, not only to protect their physical health but also their financial and economic stability has seen world leaders across the globe introduce many innovative measures.

As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, one man has stood strong as a leader to champion the needs of his people. That man is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson.

When the history is written it will record that Boris Johnson stood with his people when they most needed a leader, a champion, a fighter and most of all a person to understand their struggles.

Through the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, Boris ensured that “no stone was left unturned” in dealing with the massive economic downfall that has emerged from COVID-19.

The first announcement which shows that the Conservative Government is a party for the working man as it is for the businessman was the announcement of the Salary Relief for Workers Plan.

In an unprecedented step for the British government, the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, said the state would pay grants covering up to 80% of the salary of workers if companies kept them on their payroll, rather than lay them off as the economy crashes. The extraordinary payments are supposed to be worth up to a maximum of £2,500 per month, just above the median income.

Sunak said: “We are starting a great national effort to protect jobs. We want to look back on this time and remember how in the face of a generation-defining moment we undertook a collective national effort and we stood together. It’s on all of us.”

On December 12th 2019 hundreds of thousands of once Labour supporters put their trust in Boris Johnson to protect them and their economy. In this time of crisis, by announcing that his government will pay their wages, removing the uncertainty of putting a meal on the table was a pure vindication of that decision.

However the innovation, compassion and proactive governance of the Boris Johnson led government aimed at protecting the UK population did not stop there. The Conservative Government then took the patriotic step of introducing measures aimed at securing self-employed individuals.

This came as Rishi Sunak, chancellor, announced a £3bn-a-month package of support for up to 3.8m self-employed workers hit by the fallout of coronavirus, but higher earners making profits above £50,000 will lose out.

The scheme will pay a cash grant worth 80 per cent of average monthly trading profit over the past three years capped at £2,500 a month, benefiting 95 per cent of people who receive the majority of their income from self-employment.

The Conservative Party has often, but wrongfully accused as being a party for the rich and against the working man. However, Boris Johnson’s dynamic brand of one nation conservatism has clearly demonstrated to the global community that the Conservative Government he leads is based on the pillar of development for all.

During the election campaign Boris promised to release the true potential of the UK people while levelling up the United Kingdom. Less than four months later he has proven good on his word, showing that a pandemic will not hinder the development, prosperity or way of life of the UK people as he will do all in his power to present some form of relief.

Boris must be commended as well as Chancellor Rishi Sunak for enacting a thorough package which will protect the talent and diverse ability of the UK people. His move to enact legislation which would prevent renters from being evicted due to the inability to pay rent as a result of the COVID-19 crisis is another example of his exemplary compassionate leadership together with his one nation conservative ideals.

Boris routinely promised on his leadership campaign that he would deliver a vibrant brand of one-nation conservatism and his performance in the last month has done just that. Besides the brilliant packages for the self-employed individuals and employees, the Johnson-led Conservative Government also launched a robust scheme aimed at securing small businesses and stabilising larger companies.

If Benjamin Disraeli was alive he would have surely been proud of how Boris delivered upon the true values of the ideology. The core of Disraeli’s argument was that it was key to adopt a stance of paternalism towards those less fortunate. For instance, the provision of a safety net for the unemployed would alleviate the most acute forms of poverty.

Boris Johnson has done just that, he has devised a system which seeks to protect all from this unforeseen, sudden but catastrophic crisis. Johnson stood with and for his people when they needed.
