Ujjain is an ancient city and is a part of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the highly revered Hindu cities and is the city of Lord Shiva. Filled with revered temples, water tanks, and number of old monuments the city is a must visit for a traveler.

An ancient city, Ujjsin is a part of Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is also a district and houses the district and the division headquarters that share the same name, that is Ujjain. Madhya Pradesh is often called the centre of tourism of the “Incredible India”, and is home to amazing historical and modern tourist destination. Of these Ujjain is one significant tourist destination. It is one of the oldest cities in India. Records state that the city existed much ahead of the era of Mahabharata. The old traces of the city’s history state that incipient urbanization began in the city as soon as 700 BC. The city has multiple names. The significant ones include: Ujjayini, Avanti, and Avantika. It is the city that was ruled by King Vikramaditya and Ashoka, and where the famous poet Kalidasa wrote his poetry. An interesting fact about the city; there exists a university in the city called Vikram University, name after the King Vikramaditya.

Meanwhile, it is the religious aspect of the city that prevail all other aspects, and for which the city is most popular. It is one of the seven most sacred Hindu cities, and is the city of Lord Shiva. Additionally, Lord Vishnu is also highly followed and worshipped here. It is said that the city houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in the Mahakaleshwar Temple, which is one of the most visited temples in India. Note that the temple is an old temple and exhibits the refined medieval Indian architectural style. The temple has five levels containing idols of Lord Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya, and Nandi. It remains open for a visit everyday across the year. There is hardly any time when the temple is not busy with the devotees and tourists. Meanwhile, the relaxing thing is that there are various convenient modes to reach the temple. It is one of the major landmarks in the city. Plus, there are some good Ujjain Hotels that offer transportation facility to the temple.

Furthermore, it is also believed that Lord Krishna along with Balarama and Sudama received their education from the sage Sandipani at his ashram situated in the city. The ashram still exists today, and one can find the paintings of the Lord here. Meanwhile, Ujjain is also one of the four sites in the world where the Kumbh Mela is held. Visiting the city during this mela is perhaps the best time for a tour of the city. The magical religious milieu simply engulfs one within the city.

It is the ancient history, old revered temples, and other testaments from the past that attract travelers from all over India and the world to the city. The city is filled with attractions; the most prominent ones include: Kal Bhairava, Chintaman Ganesh Temple, Jantar Mantar, Bhartrihari Caves, Ram Mandir Ghat, Gomti Kund, ISKCON Temple, Mangalnath, Sandipani Ashram, Harsiddhi Temple, Gopal Mandir, Baikunth DHam Temple, Yantra Mahal, Gopal Mandir, and Jain Digambar Sangrahalaya. The good thing is that all these temples and tourist attractions are easily accessible. One can get cabs and taxis from the city’s commerce centre, where also exist the most number of budget hotels in Ujjain.
