Short Haul Travel-5 Destinations Within Five Hours Flight Time To Escape Britain’s Winter

As the cold snap kicks across the UK it’s easy to assume you need to spend big in order to flee to warmer climes. Fear not, though, getting at least some sun on your face during November, December, January and February doesn’t necessarily mean a trip to the tropics, as our list goes to show.

Barcelona, Spain

A perennial favourite of ours, irrespective of the time of year Barcelona is always fantastic. Autumn and winter are prime times to visit the city Gaudi almost built, as the hordes of tourists have left along with the searing temperatures of July and August. Ideal for culture vultures, night owls and those looking to sit on a beach when you should be huddled round the fire, you won’t regret booking some time here.

Marrakech, Morocco

Popping to Africa for a few days sounds a little ridiculous, but when you consider Marrakech is under five hours away it begins to make a lot more sense. Whether it’s a shopping trip to one of the famous souks, a few nights spent soaking up the sights and smells of the Medina, or a full vacation with the intention of hitting the Atlas Mountains- which lie just beyond the city itself- there’s a reason Morocco’s big hitter is a year-round destination for Britons.

Sicily, Italy

Just off the boot of Italy, Sicily doesn’t come as cheap as some of our other choices, but makes up for it in sheer beauty. The capital, Palermo, is stunning and offers an insight into how life was thousands of years ago, the world-famous Cappella Palatina boasts jaw-dropping mosaics, and there are abundant unspoilt villages to explore too. Oh, and as this is a small island you’ll never be too far from the serene coastline.

Malta & Gozo (pictured)

With so much history tied to Britain it’s understandable Malta and neighbouring island Gozo have long been attracting sun-starved residents of our islands. If you’re sticking with Malta itself, Valetta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right, and the old capital, Medina, is a walled city that must be seen to be believed. Meanwhile, Gozo has endless churches to be discovered and a slower pace of life, along with some of the best diving on the planet. What more do we need to say?

Lanzarote

Just 70-miles off the coast of West Africa, and at just over four hours flight time, Lanzarote is definitely one to consider. You can expect temperatures of around 20C even in the run up to Christmas, there’s some stunning architectural gems to be discovered, excellent beaches and delicious seafood ready for you to savour. Meanwhile, the volcanic nature of the island means the landscape is positively lunar, and completely unique.
