Sightseeing in India’s Spectacular State of Goa

There is no doubt that Goa is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. What makes it popular are the hottest beaches, old Portuguese colonies, churches, cheap booze, first-rate hotels ideal for weekend getaways, and much more. Head to the state on next vacation and make it a memorable one. After all, who does not like to spend a carefree holiday relishing food, people, local culture and tourist attractions?

One thing that is certain with holidays is that they are fun and they offer a much-needed break from mundane daily life. So, this holiday season, why not head to south western part of India and visit Goa? Located on the western shoreline of the Indian mainland and surrounded by Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the vast Arabian Sea, Goa is the smallest state in India. It is however easily one of the most frequented places in the country with almost an equal ratio between domestic and international tourists. Known for its wild beach parties, cheap booze, carefree and laid back lifestyle, hottest beaches, large swathes of exquisite countryside, pubs, restaurants, excellent hotels, old Portuguese colonies and churches, extravagant carnivals and festivals, and many other unique attractions, the state beckons one to visit it at least once in a lifetime. Tourist attractions and allures are plenty in number and each one is worth visiting. However, the following are some important sightseeing spots that are must-visit in order to get the best out of a Goa tour:

Basilica of Bom Jesus, built during the age of the Portuguese in India. It is one of the most famous landmarks of the state and highly revered. It houses the remains of St. Francis Xavier and thronged by millions every year. It was built in 1605 and exhibits the best of Gothic style of church architecture. A relief to sore eyes, the church also hosts a public viewing of the saint’s body, which is done in every 10 years attracting millions of pilgrims from far and wide.

Cabo de Rama Fort, dating before the arrival of the Portuguese, parts of Goa were ruled by some indigenous Hindu rules and the existence of monuments like Cabo de Rama Fort are the testimonies of the fact. When the Portuguese occupied the region, they also occupied the fort and later renovated it because of the fort’s strategic location. However, during the course of time it fell and lost its grace. The good thing is that today it is under the supervision of the state government that has helped to protect the monument, preventing from further damage and deterioration. If you are a history buff, the fort is a must-see.

Colva Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the state. Located close to Panaji, the state’s capital, the place is an ideal medium to relish Goa in true sense. Home to perfect sun-bleached sand sandwiched between the shallow shore and the long string of palm fringe, the beach is perfect for relaxation and for enjoying some fun water sports. You will find a couple of shacks and hotels here often full of tourists.

In a nutshell, home to vibrant and wonderful tourist attractions and allures, Goa is an ideal destination to visit. Reaching the place is easy. The Madgaon Railway Station is well connected to Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Kochi, Chennai, etc. Travelling to the place by train is a pleasure as there are scenic places, tunnels, and turns on the route. Book your tickets in advance, stay updated with PNR status, and get going to the place for a fun vacation.
